That is more alarms than most older homes were built with, and the layout is not decoration: a hallway alarm outside the bedrooms is the one that wakes sleeping people, and a basement alarm is the one that catches trouble while it is still small.

Carbon monoxide alarms follow a simpler rule — near the sleeping areas, and on every level that has a fuel-burning appliance or an attached garage. In a house with a gas furnace and an attached garage, that is usually one per floor plus one in the bedroom hallway.

Hardwired and interconnected — what that actually buys

In newer construction, smoke alarms are hardwired on a circuit with a third conductor that interconnects them: one alarm senses smoke, every alarm in the house sounds. At two in the morning that is the difference between a basement alarm nobody hears and a house that wakes up. Combination smoke-and-CO units cut the number of devices on the ceiling, and ten-year sealed-battery units end the annual battery ritual on the units that have them.

The older-house problem: two wires, no interconnect

Homes wired before interconnection was standard usually have two-conductor runs at the ceiling. Two honest paths from there: pull new three-wire cable between the alarms — the full fix, with some wall or attic work — or fit wireless-interconnect units, which talk to each other by radio and are the usual retrofit answer in finished older homes. Wireless costs more per device and nothing per wall; new cable is the reverse. Both are better than isolated alarms that can only warn the room they are in.

Carbon monoxide — the alarm you place by where you sleep

CO is not like smoke: it mixes with the air rather than rising, so height matters far less than people assume.
