What the tub actually demands
Most full-size spas want a dedicated 40- or 50-amp 240V circuit with GFCI protection; smaller plug-and-play 120V tubs exist and fill on an ordinary outlet, but even those want GFCI protection and an outlet in good condition. The numbers that matter are printed on the tub's data plate and spelled out in its installation manual — amps, and whether the unit wants a three-wire or four-wire feed. Wiring to the manual rather than to the brochure avoids the two expensive mistakes: a circuit too small for the heater and both pumps running together, and a disconnect mounted in the wrong place.
The disconnect within sight of the water
Spa wiring includes a disconnecting means for the tub that is visible from the water, lockable, and set back from the edge — in practice at least five feet away. The reason is simple: a service tech working in the water should be able to see that nothing can be switched back on behind them. It is one of the first things an inspector looks for, and one of the easiest things to get wrong when the tub is already sitting on a deck before anyone marks the wall.
Bonding — the part you cannot see and cannot skip
Bonding is what makes spa water safe to sit in. Every metal part in reach — the pump, the heater, the fittings, the water itself through a listed fitting — gets tied together so no piece can sit at a different voltage than any other. It is not the same thing as grounding, and it is not optional: an installation that skips or fudges the bond can put a difference you cannot see into the water you are sitting in. It is invisible when it is done right, which is exactly why it is the part a shortcut skips.
The run: distance, trenching and Michigan frost
Distance decides wire size. A long run from the panel to a tub on the far corner of a deck needs larger conductors to hold voltage under load, and that arithmetic is part of the quote, not a detail. A tub beside a detached garage or at the end of the yard can mean a buried feeder in conduit at the depth the code asks for, and in Michigan the calendar matters: ground that has frozen, a concrete pad that needs to cure, and a delivery crew that all have to land in the same week. Winter installs happen; they just get planned a little harder.
Permits, inspection and filling the tub
A spa circuit is permitted, inspected work, and the sequence protects you: the inspection happens before the tub is set and energized, not after it is full. The city's rules are the familiar ones:

Can the tub share a circuit with the garage?
No. A spa is a dedicated circuit by code — nothing else on it, sized to the tub's data plate. Sharing is both a rejection at inspection and a nuisance-trip factory afterward.
Why does the spa breaker need GFCI protection?
Because water and people are in the same place. A GFCI watches the current going out and coming back and trips on a mismatch measured in thousandths of an amp. When a spa GFCI nuisance-trips instead, the usual culprits are a heating element or moisture in a connection — worth a real diagnosis, not a heavier breaker.
What if the panel has no spare slots?
The options are a subpanel near the tub, a load-management device, or a service upgrade. A good electrician prices the cheapest one that actually works rather than defaulting to the biggest job.
When is it safe to fill and power it on?
After the work passes inspection. Energizing an unapproved installation is not just paperwork — it is how a bonding or grounding mistake ends up in the water with you.
